Për shkak të pandemisë, ceremonia e ndarjes së çmimeve MTV Europe Music Awards ishte ngjarja e radhës që u mbajt në mënyrë virtuale. Vajzat e Little Mix, me përjashtim të Jesy Nelson që nuk mund të ishte e pranishme për arsye shëndetësore, drejtuan ceremoninë. Performancat u filmuan në vende të ndryshme në Europë.

Lady Gaga ishte artistja më e nominuar, ndjekur nga Justin Bieber dhe BTS. Ky i fundit, grupi K-Pop, ishin më të vlerësuarit, duke marrë katër nga pesë çmime. Në nominimet e këtij viti, u prezantuan tri kategori të tjera çmimesh: Best Latin, Video for Good dhe Best Virtual Live.
